Northern Art

Northern Art is the term given to the gritty 20th century industrial and urban landscapes particular to the North West of England, as personified by the works of L.S.Lowry.

This genre of art depicts the harsh realities as well as the lighter side of life of the people living and working in an around Manchester and its surrounding towns, both pre-war and post-war, often featuring factory’s, chimneys, viaducts, canals and terraces.

This school of artists have in the main been influenced by Lowry and in many cases were friends of his that worked alongside him. There is also a new generation of modern day Northern artists creating new and vibrant paintings whilst preserving this artistic culture.
