Spotlight on: Derbyshire

Share

Derbyshire is a county that offers the best of both worlds.  On one hand it’s home to the breathtaking views of the Peak District National Park and on the other, it offers a cosmopolitan contrast with Manchester and Sheffield only a one-to-two hour drive away.

Things To Do

For fans of classic literature, living in Derbyshire you’ll never be too far away from a beautiful country house.  You can visit Chatsworth House in the delightful market town of Bakewell, thought to be the inspiration for author Jane Austen’s Pemberley in the novel “Pride and Prejudice”.  The stately home Haddon Hall is also nestled in Bakewell, where you can immerse yourself in the history of the Tudor architecture and Elizabethan gardens – both filmed for three versions of “Jane Eyre”.  As one of England’s finest medieval manor houses, it has also been featured in “Pride and Prejudice”, “The Other Boleyn Girl” and the cult classic “The Princess Bride”.

After taking in the beauty of these country homes in Bakewell, you simply can’t pass up the opportunity to visit The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop – after all, the town is famous for it.  You can even get involved with the baking yourself and have your very own pudding making experience!

If you love to get lost (but not too lost) in the outdoors, the Peak District offers an array of adventures, from rock climbing and potholing to rowing and kayaking: the opportunities are endless.  The Heights of Abraham is a famous attraction of the Peak District, where you can take a cable car to soak up the natural beauty of Derwent Valley.  There’s no experience like it in Derbyshire – it must be at the top of your list!
